Moments of Evolution (2021)
Moments of Evolution imagines what evolution might look like if its slow processes could be witnessed in individual moments.
Organic forms appear suspended in states of transformation, their shifting shapes suggesting growth, adaptation and the continual emergence of new life. Through abstraction and carefully controlled light, familiar subjects become ambiguous structures that exist somewhere between the botanical, the biological and the imagined.
Light is integral to the work, revealing folds, contours and hidden surfaces that create the impression of organisms caught in the act of changing. Rather than illustrating evolution directly, the photographs evoke its underlying processes, encouraging viewers to contemplate the forces that drive adaptation and innovation in the natural world.
The series reflects my continuing interest in using photography to reveal unseen processes. Drawing on ideas from science while embracing visual ambiguity, Moments of Evolution explores the beauty and mystery of transformation that lies at the heart of living systems.
