Origami Folds
(1996 – 2005; 2018-2020)
Origami Folds explores the illusion of depth and form created through nothing more than folded paper and light. By photographing a single sheet of paper that has been folded and unfolded, the series transforms a simple material into complex abstract structures that challenge perception and reveal unexpected spatial relationships.
The work was inspired by the intersection of origami and engineering, where principles of paper folding have led to innovations ranging from deployable satellite solar panels to medical devices. Rather than depicting traditional origami forms, these photographs investigate how light, optics and photographic observation can generate new textures, forms and visual ambiguity from the simplest of constructions.
Created using large-format 8×10 film, the series began in the 1990s and continues as an ongoing exploration of the relationship between science, perception and photographic abstraction.
